Michael Bouvet, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in endocrine surgery and surgical oncology. He is the Director of Endocrine Surgery at UC San Diego Health. Dr. Bouvet’s expertise includes performing surgery for benign and cancerous thyroid nodules; parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism, Whipple procedures (pancreatoduodenectomy) for pancreatic cancer; minimally invasive robotic-assisted esophagectomy; and laparoscopic adrenal surgery. He also performs surgery for tumors of the parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, liver, esophagus, stomach and pancreas. As a professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Bouvet instructs students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research focuses on fluorescence-guided surgery for gastrointestinal and endocrine tumors. Dr. Bouvet also leads National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded studies that aim to use fluorescence image-guided surgery to improve the visualization, detection and resection of pancreatic and colon cancer. He has co-authored more than 300 articles, and his work has appeared in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Cancer Research, among others. Dr. Bouvet completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and a residency in general surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncologists, and the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Bouvet has been consistently elected as a top physician in Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors® and a top doctor in San Diego Magazine‘s “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence” annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.
